Dale Kirby Question Period (05.31.2012)
MR. SPEAKER: The hon. the Member for St. John’s North.
MR. KIRBY: Mr. Speaker, early childhood educators have said that the planned wage supplement increase for only Level II ECEs who operate child care centres is misguided.
Will the minister now commit to a more equitable solution for all ECEs?
MR. SPEAKER: The hon. the Minister of Child, Youth and Family Services.
SOME HON. MEMBERS: Hear, hear!
MS JOHNSON: Thank you, Mr. Speaker.
Mr. Speaker, this government is absolutely committed to the highest quality of child care – not only in this Province, Mr. Speaker, but in the country – and that is what this strategy aims to do. Not only are we going to aim for the highest quality in the country, but we are going to have more affordable rates for parents, and we are going to increase spaces by 70 per cent, Mr. Speaker. We will be doubling our investment in ten years, spending $457 million over ten years, Mr. Speaker – that shows our commitment to children.
