NDP Housing Critic Gerry Rogers

NDP Housing Critic Gerry Rogers (MHA, St. John’s Centre) says the $10 million budget cut to Newfoundland and Labrador Housing Corporation is a shameful display of government’s complete lack of understanding of the housing crisis facing thousands of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians.

Members of the NDP Caucus say it is about time that the premier talks about social justice and the need to support women. They are taking the premier’s comments seriously, and plan to hold government accountable for her public commitment to social justice.

MR. SPEAKER: Order, please!

The Member for St. John’s Centre.

November 22 is National Housing Day in Canada, and NDP Housing Critic Gerry Rogers (MHA, St. John’s Centre) had some questions for the provincial government on the subject.

MR. SPEAKER: The hon. the Member for St. John's Centre.

MS ROGERS: Mr. Speaker, today is National Housing Day. In many parts of the Province, housing costs have risen faster than anywhere else in the country, and rents have increased four times faster than the rate of inflation. Rental vacancies are at historic lows.

NDP Critic for Aging and Seniors Gerry Rogers (MHA, St. John’s Centre) wants to know why the department of Health and Community Services is denying an 89-year old veteran a subsidy she is entitled to for assistance in living in a long-term care facility.
